Do you really need color? The best black and white printers will be happy to handle most printing tasks for you.

It's 2021; why are you looking for the best black and white printer? These days they are the exception rather than the rule. Although black and white printers used to be much cheaper than color printers so far, they are really not much now.

The question is: what is your real purpose for using the printer? If it is mainly used to print letters and documents, or if you mainly use black and white printers, black and white printers can provide you with better services. It will do the job. Compared with color printers, its maintenance cost is much lower because you don’t have to worry about multiple ink cartridges and it may be faster—especially because black-and-white printers are almost entirely laser printers instead of inkjet printers. If you need a reliable multifunctional black-and-white printer that can meet almost all your needs, then this model from HP can do it. It will output page by page with good speed and exquisite quality, it has a built-in scanner, and it has a convenient touch screen, which is perfect for getting the results you need. 

There are also excellent software for your computer or mobile phone to make your life easier. Incredibly, if you need to communicate with people in the Stone Age, it can even be used as a fax machine.

Brother’s wireless model-Brother MFC-L2750DW-is a good choice if you are interested in the aforementioned HP model but want to keep your choice. It prints slightly faster than HP, and can handle heavier paper (up to 230gsm compared to HP's 163gsm), and its horizontal DPI is twice (but vertical DPI is half; wobble and roundabout).

Like HP, the Brother MFC-L2750DW has an easy-to-use touch screen and can even be used as a fax machine for some reason; however, it is also larger and heavier than HP, which may discourage some people. But in fact, either of these two can become an excellent all-round black-and-white printer.

Need these pages to be fast? The Brother HL-L5100DN monochrome laser printer can spit them out at a rate of 40 pages per minute, making it the fastest printer you can get without looking at the ultra-fast, ultra-expensive printing beasts at the bottom of this review.

There is an optional parallel connection, and its print quality is good and clear. There is no scanner, but if you just want a simple printer that can take out pages as quickly as your computer or mobile phone sends pages, then this printer is hard to beat. 

Lack of desk space? This compact Xerox B210 has a fairly small footprint, and although there is a smaller black-and-white printer (see below), you don’t have to compromise on quality.

Despite the reduced size, the Xerox B210 still has a respectable output rate and the same 1,200 x 1,200 print resolution as most of the more expensive models in this review, and you can connect to it wirelessly. Most importantly, the price of Xerox toner cartridges is often cheaper than other brands, so the cost of this toner cartridge during its entire life cycle will be lower.

The cheapest black and white printer we can find is also the smallest and lightest; however, the price and size are the best choice for this compact HP. If you value clear, high-resolution prints, this may be difficult to pass because it can only be printed at 600 x 600 DPI, and it also takes time, with a maximum output of 20 pages per minute.

In other words, if you only need to print occasional letters that don't take up too much space, then this LaserJet is definitely worth the money; just don't expect it to be a miracle.

The specifications of this black-and-white printer won't make anyone's heart beat faster. It will print at almost the same resolution and speed as the aforementioned HP LaserJet Pro M15w, but it has at least the advantages of a built-in scanner.

However, there is a trick on its sleeve that can make anyone who needs a lot of printing and knows how much the toner cartridge costs to like it. HP Neverstop comes with a large-capacity toner cartridge that can print 5,000 pages out of the box; when you need more toner, the standard toner cartridge price can save up to 60%, making it an ideal choice for cost-conscious people.

We have now entered the realm of serious printing. This Kyocera is not suitable for your home office. It is a heavyweight black and white printer designed for printing a large number of pages for a large number of users at maximum speed. It only takes 4.5 seconds to send the first page in a print job, and then it will be 55 pages per minute (if printing A5, it will be 82 pages per minute).

This Kyocera can hold a large amount of paper and can handle paper weights up to 220gsm. If you plan to print a lot, it comes with enough toner for 10,000 pages, and you can get a toner cartridge with a capacity of 25,000 pages.

Xerox Versalink B600DN is more expensive, larger, and heavier than Kyocera, but the functions are basically similar. If you need a shared office printer that takes a lot of time, it's worth paying more. It’s just a bit better than Kyocera. It has an intuitive touch screen display, supports gesture input and task-centric applications, and it has more memory (and the option to install a 250GB hard drive), so it’s unlikely to be huge Printing work slows down.

No need to install new toner, it will last longer; it is equipped with a 10,300-page ink cartridge, if you read a lot of pages, you can even get a high-capacity ink cartridge that fits 46,700 pages.
